Snape/Harry: The Beginnings
I'm expecting contributions from everyone who has some information. I will save this post on my lj memories.

Thanks to all of you and especially Unquiet ([info]ana_snapeana), who's an important member of the Brazilian HP fandom and my friend, I already know that:

On October 23th, 2000, Majolique posted the first Snape/Harry story, on hpslash ML (message #2502). This story can be read on PSA:

Midnight Confessions, by Majolique (You'll need the password, which you can get if you join [info]psa_dungeons).

A week later, on October 31st, Unquiet posted the first part of 'A Different Lesson', also on hpslash ML (message #2713). The second part was posted on November 9th, on ff.net. You can read 'A Different Lesson' on Walking the Plank:

A Different Lesson, by Unquiet.

Sometime during/after August 2001, [info]kangeiko posted Two Loveable Young Women on a yahoogroups list, and then archived it on ff.net.

Also around August 2001, Telanu ([info]somniesperus) began to write the Tea series.

In October 2001, McKay's ([info]scribbulus_ink) Too Wise to Woo Peaceably came out, according to [info]ellid.

In November 2001, Luthien ([info]luthien) wrote Aftermath, a response to a challenge posted by Telanu on Snapeslash ML (Oh Professor Snape, you sexy bitch).

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (US title: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone), the first HP movie, was released on November 16, 2001.

On November 24, 2001, the SnapexHarryML, a yahoogroup, was founded by Alia. Telanu, McKay and Luthien were some of its members.

On the first of December, 2001, Sushi ([info]wikdsushi) came into the ship. Marching Off To War (CW-Verse) was her first Snape/Harry fic.

The first wave of the Severus Snape Fuh-Q Fest (SSFF), organized by [info]luthien and [info]tboy, started at the end of March 2002 and contributed to the overall number of stories featuring the pairing appearing in a short-ish period of time.

Midnight Blue started posting "The Mirror of Maybe" on FF.net in March 2002. The story got a significant following. According to [info]maverickmila, it had received about 5000 reviews on FF.Net when it was pulled down. The Mirror of Maybe Yahoo Group has currently 6795 members. On 22 April 2002 the story was added to the Noire Sensus Archive, but the latest updated chapters are only available on the author's site.

You can read other interesting historical testimonies here.

I believe the release date for SS/PS in the UK and the US was 15 November, 2001. (I actually have fic that predates it, but it shall never, ever, EVER see the light of day. When my writing's bad, it's bad.)

Just being picky. :)

I think an earlier version of Telanu's site said something about being one of the first people to write H/S - back in the day when she has those hilarious 'boy-on-broomstick action' ribbons. So she'd definitely be someone to ask about the trend, particularly if she knew about the general lack of Snarry fic.

It was Telanu who mentioned Marjolique's and Unquiet's stories as the first Snarry's ever. You can read my previous post, Brazil & Snarry's Origins. And if she has something else to add, it will be very welcome!

I don't really have anything else to add, actually. >:D< That is the be-all and end-all of what I know about Snape/Harry's origins. Although I do have one slightly annoying request: could you change your link to my site so people hit the splash/warning page (www.amplexus.org/~telanu) with all the Safesurf and NetNanny stuff? It's just one of my quirks. I'm paranoid in these lawyerly days :-( Thanks.

And I think JayKay was indeed in the fandom then, writing Snape/Lupin while I was writing Snape/Harry. But it's all mixed up in my head now! I can't keep anything straight. (Least of all Snape and Harry. *badump-ching*)

Thanks, darling. And your request is not annoying at all. Excuse me, I didn't see the warning. I've already fixed the link.

I can't keep anything straight. (Least of all Snape and Harry. *badump-ching*)
Please keep them bent, LOL!

'boy-on-broomstick action' ribbons

Oh, I remember those! In response to Christopher Noxious Noxon's MSNBC article about "Harry Potter Porn." Gah, what a loser.

Good times. Good times.

I know! That moron! That's what I loved the ribbons so much, apart from being such an unwittingly terrific line. I made my family t-shirts last Christmas as part of their presents with those iron-on, computer-printed tranfers, and in the process made myself a Snape and trio t-shirt. And on the sleeve?

'Boy-on-broomstick action found here.'

Lol. But only on the sleeve where no one would read it and beat me up for it ;)

Why don't you tell me the complete story, with names and links and dates and so on? Then I could include it in the main post? What do you think? (You might not like the idea, I don't know.)

Who, me? Heh, it's just a little bit of fandom trivia ... but if you want it, sure. I wonder if Noxon's article is still online? I bet it is, the rancid piece of idiocy.

Here via your recent [info]snape_potter post. I definitely remember another Snape/Harry fic out there before August 2001, as well as the two mentioned above. Also, I wrote Two Loveable Young Women sometime during/before August 2001, as it was posted on a yahoogroups list (don't remember which one, unfortunately) and then archived at fanfiction.net in August 01. I definitely remember reading a few Snape/Harry fics before posting, as I needed to feel a little more secure about posting!

Oh, great! I'm going to include the info on your story. If you find out which story is this other one, please let me know and I will update this thread ASAP.

Hiya. I don't know if I should be mentioning this or not, but, eh, why not. :) I began writing Legacy of Old back in November 2001, mostly thanks to reading Telanu and McKay. It was part of the first few stories using the idea of Harry coming back to Hogwarts to teach Defence Against the Dark Arts; I remember asking around and a lot of people telling me that it wasn't a very well-used idea at the time (of course, at the time Harry/Snape brought up a grand total of 4 pages on an ff.net search... I feel very old). It was doing well before ff.net decided to ban NC-17 material. I'm pretty sure I have records somewhere on a disk; I saved everything before ff.net did their grand NC-17 purge.

I'm sorry I took so long to reply. RL's been hectic, but as soon as I can I'll take a look at your story and decide about its inclusion or not.

I remember that story! I've still got a link somewhere in my HP folder!

Wow, another way-back-when fic to add to my fandom history! :D This fandom makes me feel old sometimes.

Hahaha, honestly, I try to forget that I wrote it. *coughs* Not my finest work, I'm afraid, but I did learn things while writing it.

I know, all of this has been so long ago!

OK... talk about replying to an old topic. ;)

Would Midnight Blue's posting of The Mirror of Maybe starting in March 2002 count as a significant event? It got a significant following if I remember correctly, something on the order of 5000 reviews on FF.Net by chapter 10 and 6795 current members following the yahoo group. I know it also turned a lot of people on to the pairing. (And the amount of freaking out that occured when it was pulled from FF.Net was likewise astonishing.)

You're right: the "Mirror of Maybe" was very important to the Snarry history, and March 2002 is early enough for me to include it in the "beginnings". Thanks for your input. I have already edited the original post to include your reference.
